Seems you sort of answered your own question. The internet has the potential to make people smarter. I have learned some interesting facts on the internet. But that’s just it. They are just random facts that are not really connected in any way. However when I really want to learn something, I do not just skim over random web sites. I find the information I need and take the time to read it carefully, maybe even print it out as in the case of recipes or anything else that has step by step instructions.
I’ve learned to communicate better with my doctors to get better treatment. I’ve learned to care for my various houseplants better.
The internet can be educational or entertaining or just a pass time. How you use it is up to you.

While people surf the internet, they dont think that they should read or think about it deeply so they dont put as much effort into what they think or they just refuse to apply any thought. I think that books will make you smarter rather than the internet will.

that’s not true for me… i use the internet frequently on neopets, and i have a 4.0. maybe it’s because i balance the two out, and i spend more time studying. but, i’m not a geek.lol

The internet is an amazing tool but you bring up an excelent point because it does make us dumber from an individual stand point. The fact is the internet is the only way we are smart at all. The internet is all our brains put together because it is stuffed with information. To find information we just type what we want into a search engine. We have the same problem in school every child just punches numbers into a calculator to solve a problem. Soon computers will be our minds at this rate. Excelent topic, keep it up.

This thing is not that easy! so no I do not think it makes us dumber. The truth is that the average person today comes in contact with more numbers in one day than the average man 200 years ago saw in his entire life. We can instantly contact and find out about just about anything. Years ago some iman or cleric told his people what he thought and they believed him no matter how stupid he was or how foolish the thought. He told them God speaks to me. So he was worshipped and maybe he was an idiot. Those who read the bible for themselves was burned at the stake. Now we are able to question everything.
Presidents went into office and became God’s! No one dared say that Kennedy had a corus line of women coming into his office. He was immoral and everyone knew it and it was never said. Now Clinton had an affair with some college kid and it was the end of the world. The past presidents had a stable of beautiful black women. That was never talked about he was the president. Now we question everything.
