Chris Nolan is taking a break from the Batman series. That said, there is simply too much money, and buzz for them to not make a third movie. Nolan will direct, and Bale will be Batman. They have both said that they will not be involved without the other.
Consider that the last Batman 3 came out even with a new director, Joel Schumacher, a new Batman, Val Kilmer, they paid Jim Carrey 20 million to be the Riddler, and the only character to return from the first two was Alfred.
Batman 3 is coming!
Here is what has been confirmed through various sources both online and in print. Aaron Eckhart signed with Warner Brothers to do two movies in the series, Two Face will definitely return. If you don’t believe this than ask yourself why Chris Nolan would go out of his way to tell the story of Harvey Dent, only to transform him into Two Face in the final 15 minutes, only to kill him off in the last few minutes after he killed a mere 5 people? Not likely.
They had a funeral for Harvey Dent because Harvey Dent (Gotham’s White Knight) is dead, and the monster known as Two Face has emerged. Batman took the same fall as Two Face in the building only to get up and run to the Batcycle. Two Face survived burns over half of his body, and a high speed auto wreck, but not a three story drop?
This answers who will not be in the third movie, The Riddler. I have heard ridiculous rumors that Johnny Depp has been signed to be the Riddler and that is simply not true. Nolan has not signed on to do a third Batman, and there is no way that the studio would hire a new actor into an existing series without the director’s approval. Chris Nolan is far too creative to put Two Face and The Riddler in his third crack at the series. The Riddler is out. (P.S. In my opinion you have a better chance of seeing Johnny Depp cast as the Joker than as the Riddler).
I am of the opinion that Chris Nolan will try to complement Two Face with a villain that has never been on the big screen before. In case you don’t know there are ton of villains that have never been done before. I would assume the front runners would be Calendar Man, Black Mask, and Talia Al Ghul though that is pure speculation.
I know they plugged catwoman in The Dark Knight (Morgan Freeman says the armor will do fine against cats). Catwoman comes with alot of baggage, i.e. they would have to incorporate Selena Kyle into Nolan’s Gotham which might be tough. She is also among the most popular villains, meaning it has been done before (remember Halle Berry as Catwoman) me either but it happened.
The Penguin was by far the darkest character of the 90′s Batman’s, and with Nolan’s ‘darker’ vision it would be difficult to top Danny DeVito’s Penguin portrayal. Again it is difficult to incorporate such marquee villains into such a grounded series.
Think how long it took Nolan to develop the character of Two Face, does it seem likely that he would just throw the Penguin, or Catwoman directly into the mix without any background?
Really no one knows who will be in the full cast. Nolan has already said that he will under no circumstances do a Robin. We know Two Face will return, though he will likely have help. Feel free to reply with relevant speculation, but rumors i.e. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin, Angelina Jolie as Catwoman have already been explored on other places and there is no validity to those assumptions. (who can honestly say they called Heath Ledger as the Joker?)
On a sidenote my personal opinion is that it will be Blackmask. In the comics he becomes the leader of the mafia which is already well incorporated into Nolan’s Batman.
Peter, why would they sign Aaron to Batman Begins a movie he wasn’t even in? We would have all thought he was the Joker if that was the case. Why would they kill off Two Face and (with Heath’s passing) start from scratch? Sorry I forgot Commissioner Gordon from Batman Forever. The mob boss gets tossed off a third story and doesn’t die but super villain Two Face can’t take it? I’ve read the Long Halloween and its about killings on Holidays with each chapter being Halloween, T-Day, XMas, etc. There are 25 villains in that graphic novel and if you ever read it you will know the dark knight was nothing like the novel. Who needs to get who’s facts straight? I’m telling you Nolan builds up his characters, and if it wasn’t for the huge cliffhanger value of the end of Batman Begins, (and Jack’s Version) they would have developed the Joker, a man who needs no introduction.

Wow! you like to write!(-: Well its suppose to be Johny Depp as the Riddler!
woah kool stuff lol
Warner Bros. president of production Jeff Robinov hopes a third film will be released in 2011.[81] Nolan is not committed to another sequel, explaining that he does not normally line up projects after completing a film, noting “Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?”[82] He added the only reason he would return would be if he found a necessary way to continue the story, but he feared midway through filming another installment he would find it redundant.[83] Nolan had written a rough story outline and made some notes by December 2008, despite his uncertainty in returning for the sequel.[84]
Gary Oldman is confident Nolan will return,[85] and Bale said he would return if Nolan did.[86] Oldman hinted in the third film Gordon would have to “hunt down Batman”.[87] He has also speculated that the villain of the upcoming film might be the Riddler.[88] Nolan explained that as long as he is directing, he is not including Robin in the franchise because Bale is still portraying a “young Batman”, which meant “Robin’s not for a few films”.[89] In addition, Nolan considers the Penguin difficult to portray on film, explaining, “There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we’re doing. The Penguin would be tricky.”[90]
Kate Beckinsale has expressed interest in playing Catwoman,[91] while rumors are spreading that Angelina Jolie is reported to be Catwoman. Julie Newmar, who played Catwoman in the Batman series from 1966 to 1967, said “Angelina would own the part.”[92] David Tennant and Brian Austin Green wish to portray the Riddler.[93][94] Aaron Eckhart had expressed his enthusiasm that he would reprise his role for a sequel if asked, although he later confirmed that, in talks with Nolan before Heath Ledger’s death, the director considers Two-Face to be dead.[95] Michael Caine commented that a studio executive was interested in casting Johnny Depp as the Riddler, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.[96] Hoffman later denied the rumor.[97]
Well my favorite villan in the cartoon Batman was the Joker
My second was the Penguin
But i wouldnt mind if Johnny Depp layed the Riddler
That would be cool
mhmm.
johnny depp used to be really hot:)
Get your facts straight
-Aaron said recently in an interview that two face is dead and that neither the character or himself will be returning.
-As for the contract part with aaron, all the cats, director, writors, etc are signed for 2 movies (batman begins was one) and an option for the 3rd. this option depends on the story, and since dent is dead, aaron will only reprise his role in flashbacks
-Its dumb to have a funeral for the “good half” of someone, dont you agree?
-The reason why two face had such a short part (like ra’s Al Goul as villian) was becuase the two face story was based on a comic book The Long halloween where The Joker attempted to drive gordon (replaced by dent) insane by making have “a” bad day. two face was just trying to balance out from the things he lost (his face, rachel, …)Two afce wouldn’t go on as a villian becuase in nolans version he sisn’t a madman, he is just a man who finally went over the edge and is making “only” those pay for their wrongs.
- I dont know about you, but a 3 story fall (approx 30ft) is definietyl enough to kill someone. the only reason why batman didn’t die is that he was dropped after his hand slipped while dent was thrown, he has armour, and his cape provided some air resistance
-Commisioner gordon was the 2ND character to return to batman forever from the previous films
I am sorry i meant The Killing Joke, my apology
and as for the contract part i worded it poorly. the original cast (from batman begins) were given a two movie plus an option for a thrid contract. Aaron and maggie were only contracted to one. I could not find the interview but it was on comingsoon.net a while ago where aaron stated he or the two face character is not returning.
- the fall part you have to look at the way they fell. maroni was dropped in a vertical position and hurt his legs (u see him with a cane later in the movie) while dent was viciously thrown off. Also dent could have sustained internal injuries from the crash (internal bleeding, slow organ failure) which could explain why he died
nolan also stated in an interview found from the same site that the intention was to have the Joker reprise his role if their was a future film.
i agree about the pengiun part (nolan said he would most likely not have the pengium cause its too fictional)
And as for the characters that you have listed, it is my opinion that nolan would choose a villian who is much more known such as the riddler, catwoman, or bane (if he were depicted in his comic book form and not like a thug in batman and robin)
and just out of curiosty why don’t you want depp as the riddler. No disrespect to ledger, but depp is one of the few that could top ledger’s performance
[...] Who will be the next Villain in the third Batman movie … [...]
